Kielder Water

 

The Kielder Partnership staged

a competition to design a new observatory to be located in the

hills surrounding Kielder Village

in Northumberland.

 

With its dark skies and lack of

light pollution, the area is ideal for specialist and amateur astronomers, researchers and small groups.

 

The proposals are a reaction to

the rugged yet barren landscape.

A variety of viewing platforms and observation points are housed within monolithic structures arranged across timber planes that draw one into the surrounding scenery.
